Evaluation of Media for Counting Viable Bacteria in Estuaries

1Plate counts of viable bacteria in estuarine water samples were made using seven standard agar media.2Highest counts were obtained on Anderson's medium which is therefore recommended for general estuarine use.3The composition of Anderson's medium was peptone 2.5 g, yeast extract 2.5 g, FePO40.1 g and agar 15.0 g, made up to 11 with artificial estuary water.
