More than 57, or 2868, of U.S. hospitals are part of a health system or network (www.aha.org/aha/ resource-center/Statistics-and-Studies/fast-facts.html). The American Hospital Association (AHA) defines a health system as either a multihospital or a diversified single-hospital system. A multihospital system is two or more hospitals owned, leased, sponsored, or contract-managed by a central organization. A network is defined as a group of hospitals, physicians, other providers, insurers, and/or community agencies that work together to coordinate and deliver a broad spectrum of services to their community.
