h1-Cyclopentadienyltin(IV) halides exhibit low M#xF6;ssbauer Quadrupole Splittings reflecting the similarity of the C5H5and halide ligands at tin, and leading to the expectation of strong Lewis acid character; however, Lewis bases form the expected adducts only if bidentate, or in the case of (h1-C5H5)2SnCl2and pyridine, only in petroleum ether, while in benzene for X#x2012;Cl and in all solvents used for X#x2ED;Br and I, SnX4.2py and (h1-C5H5)3SnX form from (h1-C5H6)2SnX2through redistribution; andh5-C5H5SnCl likewise forms tin(II) chloride adducts only.
