The healthcare system is evolving; privatisation, the Mid-Staffordshire enquiry, revalidation. The list of issues, agenda and protocols is as diverse as it is confusing; and to many GP trainees, seemingly irrelevant to day-to-day clinical and administrative responsibilities. Is this really the case? Should you be bothered by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and the shift of political and economic power to primary care? Is it really worth understanding the 'bigger picture'? Well, the NHS Medical Director's National Clinical Fellows Scheme (CFS) argues that it is worthwhile. What follows is an overview of the growing importance of clinical leadership roles in primary care, the practicalities of the CFS scheme and my experience of it.
