Caring for surgical patients: The authors reply

We thank Jane Fitch for her thoughtful comments about our research findings (Jun 2014) and for providing her perspective on the importance of improving perioperative care for all patients. As noted in our article, we believe that surgeons and other specialists have a role to play in the leadership and strategic direction of shared-savings models such as accountable care organizations (ACOs). Overlooking surgical care is a missed opportunity for ACOs to achieve their goal of increasing value for their patients.
