Twenty-one new complexes of rare earth (III) with malonic acid have been synthesized by the reactions of rare earth chlorides, nitrates or perchlorates with malonic acid in 96-ethanol solutions. They are: (1) chloride system, RELCl 2H2O(RE=La, Pr, Nd, H2L= malonic acid), RE (HL) L EtOH 3H2O (RE=Sm-Dy), RE(HL)L#x2013;2H2O (Ln=Ho-Yb); (2) nitrate system, LaLNO33H3O, RE(HL) L EtOH 3H2O (RE= Pr, Nd, Sm-Dy), RELN034H2O (RE= Ho-Tm, Y); (3) perchlorate system, LaLC104, EtOH- H2O, RE (HL) L EtOH- 3H2O (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm-Dy), RE(HL)L- 2H2o (RE=Ho-Yb). All of the complexes hare been characterized by elementa analysis, molar conductance, TG, DTA and IR spectra. The fluorescence spectra of the complexes of samarium, eurarium, terbium and dysprosium hare been studied. And the X-ray powder diffraction patterns of some typical complexes were measured. The reasons for the different compositions have been discussed exhaustively
