A recent study published in Archives of Neurology may have revealed an association between increased levels of a certain type of cholesterol and a reduced risk for Alzheimer's disease in older adults. The study was carried out by Christiane Reitz and colleagues at Columbia University's Taub Institute (NY, USA) and looked at patients, aged over 65 years, living in northern Manhattan, USA. The team studied blood lipid levels along with neurological and neuropsychological data in a random sample of 1130 Medicare patients. None of the participants had any history of dementia or cognitive impairment.
