Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscesses - Authors' reply

Despite China's large area and huge population, few cases of liver abscess due to Klebsiella pneumoniae have been reported from the country. Shen and colleagues now present the largest single survey of 101 cases of K pneumoniae liver abscess from China. The clinical manifestations and antibiotic susceptibility patterns are similar to those we recorded in Taiwan The low mortality resulting from expeditious drainage of the liver abscess is also similar. The lower frequency of so-called invasive klebsiella syndrome with extrahepatic complications in China than in Taiwan might also be a reason for the low mortality.Shen and colleagues note the lower incidence of serotypes Kl and K2 (79) in patients with liver abscess compared with that in Taiwan. However, we note that the exclusive incidence of these serotypes recorded in Taiwan applied only to patients with invasive klebsiella syndrome with extrahepatic complications.
