Positron emission tomography using F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose can be a useful adjunct in the preoperative evaluation of soft tissue tumors and provide valuable information that cannot be obtained from CT or MRI. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is an aggressive malignant neoplasm that has been described only recently. Primary tumor involvement of the peritoneum, predominately affecting adolescents and young adults, is the most common presentation with desmoplastic small round cell tumor. This diagnosis portends a poor prognosis, although multimodality therapy including surgery may prolong survival. Cross-sectional imaging studies typically show multiple, lobulated, peritoneal-based masses without an apparent organ of origin.
