The reagent Me3Si-L is versatile for conversion of M-Cl bonds into metal -imidazolates. Reactions with RuCl3., and Ru(Ph3E)2Cl3(MeOH) yield RuClL2 and Ru(Ph3E)2L3 (E = P or As; L = imidazolate, Iz or 2-methylimidazolate, Melz) respectively, whereas Ru(Ph3P)3Cl2 affords Ru(Ph3P)2L2. The stoichiometry of the compounds is consistent with the observed analytical data. The i. r. and C. V.-visible spectroscopic, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurement data indicate oligomerization with imidazolate bridging via the pyridyl nitrogen resulting in stable octahedral configurations around the ruthenium ion.
