In a fern,Pteris vittata, inhibition by low-energy blue light of phytochrome-dependent spore germination was counteracted by anerobiosis and respiratory inhibitors, such as KCN and NaN3. A 50inhibition of spore germination in a medium containing 0.3 mM NaN3required about 8 times longer duration of blue light irradiation compared with the control. The counteracting effect of NaN3continued for about 32 hr after withdrawal of the inhibitor. However, NaN3neither induced dark germination nor counteracted the far-red light inhibition of spore germination. Reducing agents and uncouplers were tested and dithionite and arsenate slightly reversed the blue light inhibition of spore germination.
