The type ofScopularia venustaPreuss (1851), believed to be the first species ever described in the group of fungi now known as theLeptographiumcomplex, has recently been rediscovered. Examination of this material has shown it to be in such poor condition that recognition of the species is impossible. Therefore, the generic namesScopulariaPreuss (already a later homonym ofScopulariaLindley),LindaviaNieuwland, andOuthoviaNieuwland, all based on this species, must be rejected.
