The effect of methanol extract (ME), dichloromethane (DCMF), and methanol (MF) fractions of aerial parts of Phyllanthus niruri (Euphorbiacaeae) on acute and chronic inflammation were studied. An acute toxicity test in mice was used to establish an oral LDW >5,000 mg.kg"' for ME. The ME and fractions inhibited the development of topical edema in the mouse ear and systemic edema of the rat paw, granuloma tissue growth, and the global edematous response to formaldehyde. The DCMF showed the greatest inhibitory effect in all the models, suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effects may be attributable to the alkaloids, resins, sterols, and terpenes contained in the fraction.
