The use of computer simulation as a tool for analyzing the operation of an existing diagnostic radiology department is described. Based on the statistical data gathered previously, a model of the department was formulated simulating its activities. Assuming certain values of input variables (such as the number of patients per day and their arrival times) and such system parameters as the numbers of technicians, orderlies, and examination rooms, several computer runs of the model were evaluated in terms of output variables (e.g., patient time in the department, waiting time, and the utilization of staff and rooms). The results agree well with observed data. The model provides a useful tool for evaluating and implementing changes to improve the department's performance.
