The state of the art of laser anemometry in the context of turbulent reacting flows is reviewed. The basic principles and practice of laser anemometry are discussed, and the relative merits of different instrumentation for various combustion flows enumerated. A discussion is also given of matters pertaining to entrained particles, including the characteristics of those naturally occurring in combustion flows, the techniques of particle seeding for flows deficient in particles, and also of the question of in situ sizing of particles. Sources of imprecision and the estimation of errors are also briefly treated. The capability of laser anemometry for measurements in combusting flows is discussed by reference to a number of published studies, and its likely contribution to the understanding of such flows assessed. The paper concludes with an attempt to predict the future r#xF4;le of laser anemometry in the study of turbulent reacting flow systems of practical significance.
