A dual genetical and taxonomic approach to the resolution of the mosquito taxon,Anopheles (Cellia) marshallii(Culicidae)

Abstract.Two largely independent studies, one cytogenetic and another a detailed morphological analysis, have both revealed the existence of four Biologically distinct species within populations ofAnopheles marshallii(Theobald) from South Africa and Zimbabwe. The results of discriminant function analysis using chromosomally identified individuals enabled accurate identification of pinned specimens. Classification of type‐specimens using this technique indicates that two of the newly discovered species are undescribed.
