The fertiliser policies announced by Government of India prior to decontrol of phosphatic and potassic fertilisers in the year 1992 were conducive and paid rich dividend in terms of increased investment in the fertiliser industry and thereby creating new capacities and enhanced fertiliser production along with increasing use of fertiliser and increased foodgrain production. However, the policies pursued subsequently up to middle of 2008 were mainly for containing rising fertiliser subsidy and consequently, legitimate subsidy dues were declined leading to heavy under-recoveries to the companies. The policies implemented after 2006 reflects some course correction for reviving the Indigenous industry as over dependence on import of finished fertilisers could be risking the food security of the nation to handful of countries who have past record of carteiization at opportune time. Implementation of Nutrient Based Subsidy(NBS)for phosphatic and potassic fertilisers by the Government of India Is a land mark step in the reform process in fertiliser sector. Industry has responded weli in a short time and long term arrangements have been made for supply of raw materials as well as finished products. MBS will also lead to development of new innovative fertiliser products in the market suiting the soil needs. This will help in restoring soil health. Due Importance should be given by the Industry to the R&D work to involve specialty fortified fertilisers.
