The 3-day convocation on the changing concepts of work, aging, and retirement presented by the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center and held recently at the University of Southern California is reviewed. Synopses of presentations made by a wide array of key individuals representing academia, government, business, and industry are given. Issues raised relevant to developmental research included the need for developing new techniques of performance assessment to aid in decisions related to retention, retraining, or retirement of older workers, and the effects of alternative work patterns on psychological functioning across the life span.
