By irradiation of diphenyl malonate in cyclohexane by means of a mercury-high-pressure-lamp either 4-hydroxycoumarin or phenyl p-hydroxy-benzoylacetate is formed dependent on the reaction temperature. Diphenyl methylmalonate and di-p-tolyl malonate are cyclized to the corresponding substituted coumarines.
