This paper examines the changes in the economic environment which have taken place in Zimbabwe since independence in April 1980, concentrating especially on those which are relevant to child health. It also describes the post-independence restructuring of the health sector itself. The impact of the economic recession and structural adjustment on the economy and the health sector is reviewed. Finally, it considers the role of these factors in influencing infant and child health and nutrition, and makes the comparison with current trends in similar indicators internationally.
