The hydrodynamics of the environmental effects on the kinetics of methane formation in anaerobic sludge digestion. External mass transfer study

This study illustrates the variation of the mass transfer in terms of density and viscosity of medium and agitation. The external mass transfer was evaluated by determination of the apparent Km with acetate using stabilized urban digester sludge. The results show that the kinetics of methane formation is affected by the kinetics of external mass transfer. The external mass transfer resistance can be decreased by the agitation and/or by the diminution of viscosity.
