At the beginning of May Hydro officially began operating a new recycling line at its Rheinwerk plant in Neuss, Germany, which will in future process and remelt used beverage cans (UBCs). With this plant complex costing 45 million euros Hydro is doubling its recycling capacity at that site to more than 100,000 tpy. The molten metal obtained will be reprocessed again directly at the nearby Alunorf rolling mill to produce pre-material for beverage cans. Thus, the new recycling line will not only contribute toward supplying metal for the production cluster of Rheinwerk, Alunorf and Hydro's Grevenbroich plant, but is also an important intermediate step by the company on its way to becoming CO2-neutral by the year 2020.
