For Missouri Gas Energy, the winter of 1996-97 will always be seen as a turning point in the way this utility serves its customers. It was during this period that wild fluctuations in natural gas prices, coupled with a lack of consistently complete and accurate consumption data from the utility's customer population, caused a spate of billing inaccuracies that shook customer confidence in MGE. From the meter shop to the executive boardroom, those of us who work at MGE knew we needed to restore and strengthen the customer confidence that had been earned over decades of providing reliable, safe and affordable natural gas service to the people and businesses of Kansas City and western Missouri. In the simplest terms, MGE could and would do better.
