Quantitative evidence of the effectiveness of training devices is rare. The paper looks at some of the subjective methods of assessment, and discusses the value of figures for simulator utilization. A case is then discussed in which a change of equipment offered an opportunity to make a quantitative comparative assessment of aircraft against simulator. A method of predicting the training value of a particular aircraft in a given syllabus is described in detail, with a view to its wider application in the assessment of future training methods. Finally, a line of experiment within existing training patterns is suggested, as a possible source of much-needed information.
