In November some staff at the Kaiga nuclear power plant were found to have elevated levels of radiation. The Indian authorities have now confirmed the cause: a disgruntled employee had poured triti-ated heavy water into one of the water coolers in a service building outside of the reactor building.During routine screening on 24 November urine samples of around 800 personnel working inthe area were analysed and 92 were found to have tritium content "higher than normal". All personnel found to be contaminated had drunk water from the cooler in the service building where the electrical/ mechanical/instrument shops, chemical labs, heakh physics unit, decontamination centre, changing rooms etc. are all located.
