Since the AIDS epidemic began in the late 1970s, an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with AIDS.1 Transmission risk factors include sexual behaviors in which virus-bearing body fluids make contact with the bloodstream through breaks in mucous membranes, intravenous drug use (IDU), or administration of transfusions or blood products infected with HIV. Occupational exposure is a risk factor for health professionals, police, fire, and rescue personnel.
