Hypothyroidism is one of the most common chronic disorders in the UK: it has an annual incidence of 3.5 per 1000 in women and 0.6 per 1000 in men. Around 12 000 000 prescriptions for levothyroxine are dispensed in England each year, which is equivalent to about 3 of the population taking long-term thyroid replacement therapy. In view of this, it is important for GPs to have a clear understanding of the diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism. This article aims to provide an overview of this condition, outline when to consider investigation and how to provide continuing management for these patients.
