We read this prospective study with interest, with particular focus on the functional results of thumb opposition. The authors used the Kapandji test to demonstrate a statistically significant postoperative improvement in thumb opposition. We would like to comment on a related subgroup of patients who benefit in another way from the Ascension? PyroDisk? implant; namely those with Eaton stage li or III osteo-arthritis and an adducted trapeziometacarpal joint (TMCJ) that fails to abduct, which can be difficult to address with other techniques.
