The role of mobile satellite communication systems has become increasingly important because they provide large service areas, simple network connections, and terminal portability. These systems have become paramount in times of emergency such as disasters. When a disaster strikes, voice communications is an important way to confirm the safety of friends and family, while during the recovery period, data communications are in high demand to transmit and receive information vital to restoration and survival. To address this need, NTT DOCOMO developed and introduced a new product solution, i.e., mobile Wi-Fi router. This router incorporates a function to connect with the WIDESTAR II satellite terminal to enable data communications for individual smart phones or tablet devices. We present measurement results that show the usefulness of the router. Due to its built-in battery, it is possible to construct a Wi-Fi hotspot and offer Internet access in an area where no service is available to mobile phones or fixed-line telephones.
