Recovery ofEscherichia coliand Coliforms from Macerated Shellfish

A comparison of manual and mechanical maceration techniques for the bacteriological examination of molluscan shellfish suggests that mechanical maceration leads to an improved recovery ofEscherichia coli. Extensive use of such a technique in the routine examination of shellfish has introduced a standard considerably more rigorous than that proposed originally.
