The Netherlands have a long-lasting tradition in naval architecture and shipbuilding. Dutch seamen sailed around the globe centuries ago. Today they are top specialists in designing and building floating offshore units, dredgers, yachts and various other ships. The Dutch Maritime Network (DMN) explains itself as unique in the world, in size as well as quality. In the Netherlands over 11,000 maritime companies are concentrating within an area of 100 miles in square. Because of this density of experts and innovative nature of their developments DMN believes, probably Europe's Maritime Valley is a better denomination for the Netherlands. Starting like all students of naval architecture, with Delft University of Technology - originally founded in 1842 - the qualified knowledge of designing and building floating structures and ships is spread from MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) to special consulting companies and computer software houses down to the producing units of smaller and bigger shipbuilding groups, such as IHC, Damen, Conoship and even CIG.
