AbstractThe pathology and radiographic examination of spontaneous carpal coalition in arthrogryposis suggests that loss of joint spaces is an acquired feature and does not stem from primary lack of joint space formation as has been previously suggested. The characteristic total carpal fusion in arthrogryposis is unique and may aid in differential diagnosis when present. Finally, the anatomical location is selective and no fusions have been described in the feet of subjects with this disorder. Emphasis in the future should be towards obtaining further joint specimens for pathologic study and making careful radiographic examinations to determine the evolution of die coalition and possible occurrence in other anatomic sites.
