This is a report of a patient who developed hepatic dysfunction following administration of each of two methoxyflurane anesthetics. Fourteen cases of postmethoxyflurane hepatitis have been reported in the literature and were compared with this case. Similarities between postmethoseflurane and posthalothane hepatitis suggest that the syndromes may have a common etiology. On this basis, we recommend that patients who develop fever with leukocytosis and eosinophilia, or who develop jaundice in the immediate postoperative period, not be reexposed to the halogenated anesthetic agent.
