Our profession prides itself on its scientific foundation and evidence-based practice. Yet it is represented by the symbol of 2500-year-old pagan god! Whether it's the logos of the British Medical Association to the World Health Organization, the staff of Asclepius (Figure 1) is the image we doctors present the world. After all, what could be more reassuring, than a snake on a stick.
