A study recently published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence found that on-site testing for HIV in community-based substance abuse treatment programs proved to be more cost effective than off-site referrals for testing. The researchers measured the cost-effectiveness of several strategies used to test for HIV, which were previously evaluated in a randomized control trial conducted across 12 community-based substance abuse treatment programs in the USA. Data previously collected in the randomised control trial included patient demographics, prior testing history, test acceptance and receipt of results, undiagnosed HIV prevalence and program costs.
