Prostate cancer is a significant health problem in the United States, accounting for over 35000 deaths annually. Organ-confined prostate cancer can be reliably cured, and one way to reduce mortality is to detect the disease before it spreads beyond the prostate. Serum prostate-specific antigen and digital rectal examination appear to be effective in detecting clinically significant, organ-confined prostate cancer. Treatment of these cancers is expected to reduce prostate cancer deaths. A suggested algorithm for prostate cancer screening is proposed.
