Research examining the early emergence of beliefs about natural kinds is described, and implications for theories of category development are considered. The research challenges three assumptions implicit in many studies: that children cannot form mature concepts, that categories do not differ substantially from one another, and that classification tasks are the best measure of children’s category knowledge.
