摘要

In continuation of our earlier work, an attempt has been made to add to the information regarding dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids in algal forms of saline zones. In the present study, investigation was carried out one four algal forms belonging to two different gorups, viz. Chaetomorpha spp., Rhizoclonium spp., under Chlorophyta and Polysiphonia spp., Gelidiella sp. uner Rhodophyta. The lipid content in case of Chlorophyta members was found to be 7.9 for Chaetomorpha spp. and 5.0 for Rhizoclonium spp. (on dry basis) and in case of Rhodophyta it was 5.7 for Polysiphonia spp. and 3.2 for Gelidiella sp. (on dry basis). The most attractive feature of all these algal lipids is that they are rich in higher polyunsaturated fatty acids of carbon number 18, 20 and 22. Amongst the Rhodophyta members, Polysiphonia spp. had eicosapentaenoic acid, C_(20:5) (49.7) as the major fatty acid and Gelidiella sp. had arachidonic acid, C_(20:4) (16.8) and oleic acid, C_(18:1) (40.6) as its dominant fatty acids. Chlorophyta members, Chaetomorpha spp. had palmitic acid, C_(16:0) (23.8) as its major fatty acid and Rhizoclonium spp., oleic acid, C_(18:1) (28.9) and palmitic acid, C_(16:0) (21.3) as the major fatty acids.
