BAE Systems' facility in Plymouth was the venue for the SEE's seminar and exhibition on "the use of vibration and mechanical shock in stress screening and life testing". The day was divided into different sessions in which various papers were delivered. These included Gilbert Bastien of Screening Systems Inc of the US presenting Accelerated Stress Screening in the two morning sessions followed by Peter Moir and Steve Meredith of Cape Engineering on the "Problems and approaches to life testing" after lunch. The final presentation of the day was by Tony Davis of BAE Systems, Plymouth who gave some case studies. Bastien's presentation focused on lessons learnt in the US, specifically by the US Department of Defence that in 1970 had embarked on a programme to improve hardware reliability and robustness by using Environmental Stress Screening (ESS). It was found that stimulation rather than simulation was more effective in throwing up problems.
