In this paper we consider the problem of multidisciplinary designand optimization (MDO) of a diffuser for a steady, incompressiblemagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow. Given a fixed diffuser shape, theoptimizer should find the distribution of the wall magnets that willmaximize the static pressure increase from inlet to outlet. Thisdesign problem is solved through the use of a genetic algorithm basedoptimization program coupled with a finite element based MHDsimulation program. For MHD simulation, a least-squares finiteelement method (LSFEM) based program has been developed.
