A scalable route optimization method with a newly defined transit agent (TA) is proposed in this article. This method optimizes a routing path between a corresponding node and a mobile node by selecting an optimal routing path within a backbone area in an autonomous system (AS). To realize optimal routing, transit agents are placed within a backbone area. When receiving a datagram destined to a mobile node that is now visiting a foreign network, the home agent selects an optimal transit agent using topology information of backbone area. Then a transit agent on the way between a corresponding node and a home agent intercepts datagrams destined to the home agent and tunnels each datagram to the mobile node's current location. In this way, route optimizations are realized in distributed manner within in the backbone area. Moreover smooth data transmission is realized because signaling delay between a home agent and a transit agent is very small compared with a conventional proposal. Therefore proposed scheme is scalable and can be applied to a large-scale mobile IP network.
