A software MPEG-4 Visual Advanced Simple Profile (MPEG-4 ASP) video codec has been developed. MPEG-4 ASP has the advantage of coding efficiency by 20-40 compared with MPEG-2. The developed software codec employs an enhanced bit rate control based on preanalysis and optimized pre/post-processing. This codec produces TV/DVD quality video streams at 2-3 Mbps. The decoder playbacks video streams of SDTV resolution at 30 fps on the 800 MHz Pentium III processor in real-time.
