THERE was a huge line of weather lying across our path. We had departed from south Florida, heading north, and our foe extended from the Gulf of Mexico well out into the Atlantic Ocean. I knew it was coming, so I remained low to burn some excess fuel, hoping we would be light enough to top it. It worked. We managed to get into the upper 30s south of Jacksonville and had a relatively smooth ride atop the silky white clouds below The winds aloft were strong and I knew the ride beneath us would have been very bad indeed. The words I heard being exchanged between Controllers and Pilots confirmed my fears.
