This paper surveys some of the fundamentals of artificial earth satellites meant for communications purposes. The paper is sufficiently long to be divided into three sections. Section I starts with an introduction to satellites and deals with the classification of satellites and the orbital mechanics. It discusses the criteria for the choice of the altitude of a satellite and gives a brief account of the related problems. Section II generally concerns itself with the ground installations. It also discusses the choice of the operating frequency band and describes the factors that limit the life of a satellite. The last section, viz. section III describes the equipment aboard a satellite. This section gives a brief description of satellites that are in orbit and concludcs the paper with a comparison of satellite systems with other communications system.
