The statistical science has many roots. Where do you see the roots of CS? I will interpret "roots" in two ways: Firstly, I think of the scientific roots that motivated the development of CS as a discipline. The needs and objectives that gave rise to CS are the same as those that nurtured and guided the development of statistical science generally. The field of statistics is all about understanding data, that is, the conversion of data to information, to knowledge, and ultimately (?) to wisdom. Doing this usually requires some computations and some graphics. There has been a natural development from use of pencil and paper to calculators to computers. Secondly, I think of the scientific tools that underlie the field of statistics. These have mainly been in mathematics. CS draws not only upon mathematical tools, but also upon the field of computer science. CS addresses the same kinds of questions as traditional statistics, and uses much of the same methodology. There is a major difference in the tool set; however. With the computer we can easily simulate processes. This changes the way we look at data.
