Filtration of surface water for use as drinking water has been a common practice since the inception of the water treatment plant. The earliest designs used combinations of sand and gravel, which served to greatly reduce the turbidity in the water. Traditional treatment practices employed chemical coagulation of influent raw water, settling the bulk of the sediment in clarifiers, filtration through sand/gravel media, treatment with chlorine, and then distribution to the customers.
