Leather chemicals manufacturer TFL has published its first group sustainability report since incorporating the Lanxess leather business in 2021. Data for group manufacturing sites in France, Italy, Germany, China, India and Brazil was given for energy consumption, CO_2 emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and water withdrawal and discharge. Minor increases were seen for energy consumption and emissions from 2021 to 2022, but total wastewater discharge saw a decrease. TFL told World Leather that the energy and emissions increases were in part due to the addition of the Lanxess leather business production activities but were also attributable to reduced production overall owing to the global downturn. Automotive leather group Bader published its latest sustainability report in June, placing emphasis on sustainable uses of leather manufacturing by-products. The use of collagenic waste materials was highlighted as one of the driving forces in the group's sustainability journey. Bader has set up a company called Avema to work on upcycling developments. An initial product to come from this is sustainable fertiliser.
