摘要

A structured survey was conducted to assess the knowledge, awareness and trends in disposal of broiler slaughter waste in Puducherry. Total of 50 broiler retailers were selected randomly and information was collected by interviewing with a pre-testedquestionnaire to assess their knowledge on meat borne diseases, awareness on good slaughter practices, methods of slaughter waste disposal and sanitary measures followed. The data collected was analyzed statistically by Chisquare test using the softwaregraph pad prism to find out the relationship between education and other variables. Among the respondents only 38 percent had awareness on transmission of meat borne diseases. Around 90 per cent broiler retailers sanitized the place at the end of slaughter. Only 26 per cent of respondents were aware of proper slaughter waste disposal methods. Eighty two per cent of them disposed their effluent into public drainage and 18 per cent by letting it to flow into the ground. Among them 56 per cent disposed their solid waste into garbage bins, 32 per cent gave to the fish farmers and 12 per cent fed it to stray dogs. The study also revealed the willingness of the broiler retailers in adaptingan economical cum eco-friendly method of waste disposal. Two methodswith minimum investment for the disposal of broiler slaughter waste were attempted in the laboratory with an aim of transfer of technology to the broiler retailers in Puducherry. Slaughter waste (gut, offals and feathers) was brought to laboratory and subjected to both aerobic and anaerobic composting. Based on the physical and chemical analysis, quality and time taken to convert the waste into compost, aerobic decomposition was found to be extremely viable. Moreover this can fetch additional income forthe retailers by selling compost.
