One of the fascinations of collecting vintage promotional models-and there are a lot of them associated with this issue-is sorting through the variations and the incongruities. What was made and how among promos of the Sixties can be confusing. As an example, consider the dealer promos and toy-trade models of the 1964 Rambler American. Produced by Jo-Han (in its first year of using a warp-resistant plastic), both came with a whirring friction motor, an item commonly reserved for the toy versions. Meanwhile, like promos, some of the frictions came in true factory colors, which wasn't always the case for the mass-market miniatures. The Jo-Han 1964 Dodge Polara convertible was another friction-only model.
