This work presents an analytical methodology for synchronous generators turn-to-turn faults protection. This type of fault involves only one winding of the stator where a number of turns are shorted. The proposed method is based on morphological filters applied to the stator phase currents and terminal phase voltages. The algorithm of the methodology has been implemented in MATLAB and its threshold requires basic input parameters. All tests have been carried out with HYPERSIM software using a phase-domain synchronous machine model, which can represent real features, such as, parallel-connected windings. Comparisons with existing methods have been done considering the ability to detect or not turn-to-turn faults. The results show that the proposed method can detect turn-to-turn faults in generator stators, even when few turns of winding are short-circuited. Furthermore, the analytical procedure is secure against external faults. Due to the results achieved the algorithm proved to be very robust.
